Simple Kerala Chicken Curry

Kerala chicken curry is a popular and flavorful dish that is a staple in many households in Kerala, India. This simple recipe is easy to make and requires just a few basic ingredients. Here’s how you can make a delicious and authentic Kerala chicken curry at home:


  • 1/2 kg chicken, cut into small pieces
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • Salt, to taste
  • Curry leaves, for garnish


  1. Heat the coconut oil in a pan or wok over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion, ginger, and garlic and sauté until the onion turns golden brown.
  3. Add the slit green chilies and sauté for a few more seconds.
  4. Add the red chili powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, black pepper powder, and garam masala. Mix well.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they are soft and mushy.
  6. Add the chicken pieces and stir well to coat them with the onion and spice mixture.
  7. Add 1/2 cup of water and mix well. Cover the pan and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through.
  8. Once the chicken is cooked, add salt to taste and mix well.
  9. Garnish with curry leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
